The Physics Department of the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track position in Electrical Engineering or Physics (Electronics) at the rank of assistant professor, to begin in the Fall of 2017. The successful candidate will participate in the department’s Robotics Program (a collaborative program with the Computer Science Department), and be committed to excellence in teaching, research and service in an institution dedicated primarily to undergraduate education. He or she will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural, and interdependent world.
Responsibilities include: The successful candidate will be expected to be active in teaching, scholarship, and department and campus-wide service. The teaching load is 12 credits per semester, with a course release for demonstration of sufficient scholarly activity. Courses to be taught include: Electronics, Advanced Digital Design, Fundamentals of Engineering Design, Technical Reports in Physics and Engineering, and (as necessary) Introductory Physics lectures (both major and non-major levels) and laboratory. Candidates may be asked to teach courses in a distance learning format.
Required Qualifications: A Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering or Physics with an emphasis on electronics is required for appointment as an Assistant Professor. ABDs will be considered for appointment at a lesser (qualified) rank and salary, upon proof that the applicant’s defense of her/his dissertation will be scheduled within the first year of appointment. A successful ABD applicant will receive promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor and a salary increment at the start of the semester following verification of the terminal degree completion. An ABD hire will be limited to a one-year appointment, subject to renewal for one year only (2 years maximum).
A strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated an ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff, and administrators.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference given to candidates with demonstrated interest in working with students on research projects, and evidence of past teaching excellence.
