Argonne invites applications for the position of Director of the Accelerator Systems Division (ASD), one of three divisions comprising the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The APS is a high-brightness, hard x-ray light source and attracts approximately 5,000 scientific users each year. The APS Accelerator Systems Division (ASD) provides engineering and physics support for the Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source (APS) and pursues research and development profitable to the science of accelerators and future light source technologies. Additionally, the APS is currently planning a facility-wide upgrade that will increase the brightness of its x-ray beams by two orders of magnitude.
Provides leadership and vision for all aspects of operation, improvement and development of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) accelerator complex. Provides management expertise to appropriately plan and manage the Accelerator Systems Division’s (ASD) human and financial resources to achieve facility operational goals and to support APS Upgrade Project goals.
Directs operations and development activities of ASD scientific, technical and professional services staff to deliver effective and safe operation of the APS accelerator complex. Establishes goals and sets priorities for operational and development activities, monitors progress, and assures timely and successful completion of those activities. Leads ASD strategic planning to ensure effective long-term operation of the facility and integration with APS Upgrade planning. Participates in lab-wide accelerator activities for long-term R&D and facility development. Manages Division operation through the preparation of budgets and personnel plans and monitoring of resources.
As a member of the APS senior management team, contributes to facility-level direction for operations, strategic planning, construction, and R&D at the APS. Promotes strong ties with the APS Engineering Support Division, APS X-ray Science Division and APS Upgrade Project to enable a world-class user program at the APS and a world-leading facility for x-ray sciences at completion of the APS Upgrade Project.
Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection: Demonstrates leadership for safety within the Division and PSC, ensuring that all activities, as they apply to work performed by self or by personnel under supervision, are executed in compliance with ES&H and security responsibilities established by Argonne National Laboratory's ES&H policies, Safeguards and Security policies, work rules, and safe practices.

Leads and manages a diverse team of scientific, technical and professional services staff, creating a culture conducive to excellent performance and collaboration. Coordinates closely with the APS Upgrade Project to support APS Upgrade goals and to ensure smooth integration of current APS and accelerator goals and strategies.
Develops and maintains strong collaborative relationships with X-ray Science Division and APS Engineering Support Division Directors and Argonne management. Fosters a strong and healthy climate of diversity and inclusion. Maintains high standards in Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality Assurance for all ASD’s activities.
Contributes to strategic and tactical planning. Manages the execution of technical scope, costs, and planning schedules for accelerator systems operations, maintenance and improvements. Attracts and develops new staff members in all operational areas. Participates in Argonne Accelerator Institute activities. Prepares reports and presentations. Contributes to oversight technical reviews.
Is responsible for personnel actions in the Division, such as recruitment, promotions, performance evaluations, and salary administration.
- Comprehensive knowledge of accelerator physics, engineering and technology
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operations of complex, state-of-the-art accelerator facilities, with a minimum of 15+ years of experience in accelerator operations, research, development or construction
- Comprehensive skill in developing creative solutions to complex scientific, technical and management problems
- Experience in managing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships in a large matrix environment of internal contacts as well as external contacts made up of government, academic, scientific, or industrial institutions is Additional experience with managing relationships with the Department of Energy Basic Energy Science Office, user communities or other light source environments is preferred
- Experience in making critical decisions and exploiting opportunities for efficient operations in managing large multi-million dollar budgetary resources is preferred
- An advanced degree in a relevant technical field is preferred
- Comprehensive skills in motivating and managing people
