We have an opening for a Diagnostic Physicist/Specialist, who is responsible for supporting development, construction, maintenance and operations of plasma diagnostic systems for a large high-temperature magnetically-confined plasma fusion experiment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work extensively in the laboratory under the direction of plasma physicists responsible for various diagnostic systems
Maintain and operate complex diagnostic instruments for high availability during fast-paced experimental campaigns
Technical work may include laser construction, optical alignment, instrument calibration, analog and digital electronics, ultra-high vacuum work and mechanical design
Assist in the design of diagnostic systems, starting from physics first principles and calculations
Assist with diagnostic data reduction
Write clear and detailed reports, specifications and procedures
Required: B.S. in Physics, Engineering or a related discipline
Preferred: M.S. in Physics, Engineering or a related discipline
At least 3 years of relevant experience working in academic, industrial or government laboratory environments, either as a student or employee
Significant skills in several of these technical areas: lasers, optics, analog electronics, digital electronics and embedded systems, microwaves, spectroscopy, magnetic sensors, ultra-high vacuum, high voltage and three dimensional printing
Preferred: candidate has built and operated a diagnostic system in at least of one of these three categories:
- Interferometry, polarimetry and Thomson Scattering
- Spectroscopy: Visible, VUV and X-ray
- Microwave reflectometry and radiometry
- Diagnostic neutral beams and active spectroscopy
- High speed quantitative imaging: IR, visible, UV and X-ray
Software Knowledge and Skills:
MS Office Suite required
Preferred: Experience with one or more programming languages, especially numerical computing languages such as MATLAB, IDL or Python/NumPy/SciPy
Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience working on large-scale scientific projects preferred
Ability to execute complex tasks with a high degree of autonomy and initiative
Good verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Available to work flexible and extended hours as needed
Ability to climb, stoop/bend, balance in high places, work in cramped places, lift/carry heavy items (up to 50 lbs), push/pull/drag heavy items, stand for long periods of time
