We have an opening for an Experimental Plasma Physicist, who is responsible for participating in TAE’s experimental program by designing and conducting experiments as well as by analyzing and discussing data/results to increase physics understanding and to improve an efficiency of experiments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Identify and define scientific challenges and collaborate with others to ensure effective achievement of scientific research objectives
Carry out special or unique experiments requiring unconventional or novel approaches or research techniques
Analyze and interpret experimental data, interact with in-house technical staff and integrate the work of outside consultants
Lead in the formulation of advanced/complex scientific concepts in preliminary design phases and collaborate with other scientists/engineers to develop possible design solutions
Monitor and evaluate completion of tasks and projects
Conduct research, present papers, and keep abreast of technological development in plasma physics, keeping other scientists and engineers informed of important new advances
Write clear and detailed reports, specifications, and procedures
Select, evaluate, and develop personnel to ensure the completion of scientific goals
Required: MS in plasma physics, engineering or related discipline
Preferred: Ph.D. in plasma physics, engineering or related discipline
2-5 years of experience in experimental plasma physics environment
Knowledge of scientific systems, calculations, applications, and research
Experience in designing and operating plasma diagnostics
Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining complex experimental systems including diagnostics
Excellent analytical and data analysis skills
Available to work flexible and extended hours as needed
Software Knowledge and Skills:
MS Office Suite
Numerical Computing Language such as Matlab, IDL, and/or Python
Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Ability to thrive in a challenging, dynamic environment
Ability to cooperate and communicate well with engineering, physics/science, project management and procurement groups
Proven decision-making skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and have proven decision-making skills
Experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Field-reversed configuration or relevant compact toroid plasmas
- Mirror machines or other open magnetic confinement systems
- Neutral beam injection in high temperature magnetic confinement plasmas
- Fast ion diagnostics
- Design and operation of high voltage equipment (above 10 kV)
- High-power RF plasma heating
- Plasma sources and ion accelerators
