We have an opening for an Experimental Plasma Physicist. In support of the Neutral Beam (NB) development effort, the selected candidate will design, operate and maintain a megawatt-level NB Injection system for plasma heating and current drive.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the NB Injection system for plasma heating and current drive, including the ion acceleration system, power supplies, and associated electronics
Propose, design, and conduct experiments on plasma heating and confinement in a Field-Reversed Configuration plasma device
Analyze and evaluate experimental results
Design and optimize new particle accelerator devices and ancillary equipment
Conduct R&D of neutral beams and ion accelerators
Facilitate the interaction between the in-house engineering and physics technical staff and coordinate the work of outside consultants
Design and optimize beam and plasma diagnostics
Required: Ph.D. in plasma, accelerator, particle beam physics or related discipline
Strong background in experimental plasma physics, accelerator science, or charged particle beam physics
Ability to thrive in a challenging, dynamic environment
Ability to cooperate and communicate well with engineering, physics/science, project management and procurement groups
Proven decision-making skills and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
Conduct research, present papers, and keep abreast of technological development in plasma physics, keeping other scientists and engineers informed of important new advances
Outstanding verbal and written English communication skills and ability to write clear and detailed reports, specifications, and procedures
Available to work flexible and extended hours as needed
Software Knowledge and Skills:
Numerical Computing Language such as Matlab, IDL, and/or Python.
SolidWorks or AutoCad or similar 3D modeling software. ANSYS or similar FEM package.
Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience in designing, building, and operating complex experimental systems
Experience in at least two of the following areas:
* Plasma sources
* Ion accelerators
* Neutral beam injection
* UHV vacuum systems
* High voltage electronics (above 10 kV)
* Field-Reversed Configuration plasmas
