Applications are invited for post-doctoral research positions at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) to work on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) studies in one or more of the following subject areas: (1) stellar populations and internal dynamics of Milky Way globular clusters; (2) dynamics of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group; and (3) star formation histories of nearby galaxies.
The successful candidates will work with Drs. Roeland van der Marel, Andrea Bellini, Tony Sohn, Jay Anderson, Alessandra Aloisi, Tom Brown and their collaborators on a range of different HST research programs (including those of the HSTPROMO collaboration: http://www.stsci.edu/~marel/hstpromo.html). The common aim of these programs is to perform high-precision photometry and/or astrometry of resolved stellar populations, derive color-magnitude diagrams and/or proper motions, and interpret the results to improve our understanding of galaxy/cluster structure, dynamics, stellar populations, formation, and/or evolution. The work involves either observational data analysis or theoretical star formation history derivation (and possibly theoretical dynamical modeling). Interpretation may include analysis of related datasets from other facilities (e.g., GAIA or ground-based facilities). The nominal start date is Fall 2017, but earlier start dates are encouraged. Initial appointments are for two years, with expected renewal for a third year (subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding). Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree. Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas is required: (a) experience in high-precision photometric and/or astrometric analysis of optical/near-IR imaging data of resolved stellar populations (preferably with HST). (b) experience in star formation history studies of resolved stellar populations. (c) experience in data-model comparisons and/or theoretical modeling relevant to the structure, dynamics, stellar populations, formation, and/or evolution of nearby galaxies and/or globular clusters.
