The Space Telescope Science Institute is inviting applications for one or more postdoctoral research positions at the Space Telescope Science Institute starting as early as March 2017. The successful applicant will work with Drs. Julia Roman-Duval, Joshua Peek, and Karl Gordon on studies of interstellar dust and gas in nearby galaxies, with a focus on the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds.
There are a number of potential specific projects. One project would focus on deriving UV dust extinction curves from new HST ultraviolet spectra of massive stars obtained as part of the METAL (Metal Evolution and TrAnsport in the LMC) program. Another would focus on mapping dust extinction properties in M31, M33, the LMC and SMC from photometric observations obtained as part of the PHAT (Panchromatic Andromeda Hubble Treasury), SMIDGE (Small Magellanic (cloud) Investigation of Dust Evolution), METAL, and other programs. We are also interested in determining the three-dimensional kinematic structure of giant molecular clouds, in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, using dust maps, ISM radio data, and absorption line spectroscopy. A postdoc would work closely with the *ISM@STScI* group (including Drs. Martha Boyer, Karl Gordon, Joshua Peek, Julia Roman-Duval), which has broad scientific interests orbiting the interstellar medium, from dust producing stars to the gas and dust in the interstellar and circumgalactic medium.
This research will involve working with and, if possible, proposing for observations with Hubble, Spitzer, and ground-based facilities. Independent research in related areas will be encouraged and supported. Research experience in the areas of interstellar dust, molecular clouds, or ISM structure is desirable. Expertise in numerical methods, statistics, software, or simulations is a plus.
The position is for two years, with a possible renewal for a third year. STScI is located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and has deep ongoing interactions with the JHU Center for Astrophysical Sciences.
