TSINGHUA-BERKELEY SHENZHEN INSTITUTE
The Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI), located in Shenzhen, China, was jointly established in 2014 by the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and Tsinghua University, with the full support from the Shenzhen Municipal Government, on the initiative of building a bridge across different disciplines, cultures and countries, and between academia and industry, as well as serving as a platform for international collaboration. TBSI consists of three multidisciplinary research centers: Environmental Science and New Energy Technology, Data Science and Information Technology, and Precision Medicine and Healthcare. TBSI offers a vibrant research culture that encourages the inter-disciplinary and ground breaking research in a collegial atmosphere and intensive communications with the local and global flagship technology companies.
Research centers at TBSI invite applications for tenure-track Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Full Professor positions in the following areas:
Center 1 - Environmental Science and New Energy Technology
Lab 1a: Nano Energy Materials Laboratory (NEM)
Science and applications of heat transfer across different length and time scales in solid materials; Science and technology of energy storage and conversion; Basic materials science and engineering for energy-related applications.
Lab 1b: Environmental Science and Technology Laboratory (ES&T)
Water and waste-water technologies including (but not limited to) nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and/or toxic pollutants removal, and transformation and recovery in natural and engineered aquatic ecosystems; Environmental nano-technologies related to nano-materials, nano-scale processes and devices; Global-scale environmental science related to climate change, natural ecosystem and anthropological science (human behavior, management and policy issues).
Lab 1c: Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Laboratory (SGRE)
Fundamental theories and key technologies for building a green, efficient, reliable and optimized smart grid that is crucial to the future of Shenzhen, the nation, and the world; Theoretical topics including optimization, control theory, and economics; Applications including power systems, renewable energy, active distribution grid, microgrid, electric vehicle to grid, demand response, smart building/home, electricity market, integrated energy systems, cyber-physical system, and big data applied to smart grid.
Lab 1d: Intelligent Transportation and Logistics Systems Laboratory (ITLS)
Traffic simulation, route choice strategy, traffic signals, autonomous vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, industrial engineering, scheduling and logistics, optimization algorithms, and supply chain.
Lab 1e: Low Carbon Economy and Financial Risk Analysis Research Laboratory
Energy economics and environmental economics regarding low carbon development and climate change issues in quantitative methodology such as econometrics, optimal theory, etc.; Smart city, renewable and sustainable energy strategy, as well as management decision method, system analysis and integration; Advanced data analytics and development of mathematical methodologies for risk management problems ranging from traditional financial market to modern carbon economy.
Lab 1f: Low-Dimensional Materials and Devices Laboratory (LDMD)
Science and technologies of controlled synthesis and applications of novel low-dimensional materials, with preferred background on carbon nanomaterials and two-dimensional materials, thermoelectric/solar energy-related devices, electronic/optoelectronic devices, and flexible devices.
The Center offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
