We have an opening for a Research Scientist to independently work on Shock Physics and Detonation Science and other technically challenging problems. You will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research in the design and execution of experiments studying the high strain rate behavior of polymers, high explosives, and composite materials and be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team conducting and supporting experiments to enable innovative technologies in high explosives manufacturing and processing to develop a deeper understanding of detonative chemistry. This position is in the Materials Science Division.
Essential Duties - Design, guide, and conduct gas-gun driven planar shock experiments on inert and energetic targets. - Characterize materials and interpret results to relate material micro/mesostructures and reactivity. - Conduct fundamental research into the shock initiation and detonative behavior of explosive and reactive materials. - Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems in complex systems using numerical models. - Prepare written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports. - Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals. - Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - PhD in mechanical engineering, materials science, applied physics, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Advanced knowledge and significant experience in the production, characterization, and handling of composite reactive materials, (e.g., thermites, intermetallic/cermet forming systems). - Advanced knowledge and significant experience in Shock Physics and Detonation phenomena. - Advanced knowledge with experimental techniques in shock and detonation. - Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports, explain technical information, and provide advice to management. - Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
D esired Qualifications - Willingness to routinely work with explosives and ability to obtain and maintain qualification as an Explosives Handler. - Experience working in energetic materials research at a DOE and/or DoD facility. - Knowledge of high-speed diagnostics use in energetic materials research.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
