Instructor or Assistant Professor of Physics, Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky. The Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science at Georgetown College invites applications for a tenure-track instructorship in Physics beginning August 2020. A Master's degree in Physics, or equivalent preparation, and a background and interest in computing, are required. Candidates with a doctorate in Physics would be considered for a tenure-track assistant professorship. Georgetown College is a private liberal arts institution in Central Kentucky serving approximately 1000 students. We offer B.A. and B.S. degrees in mathematics, minors in computer science, mathematics, physics and data analysis. We also offer a major in Engineering Arts that is associated with a 3-2 transfer Pre-Engineering program. Emphasis is placed on teaching excellence in the context of a church-related college; research and professional development are encouraged and supported. The teaching load is the equivalent of four three-hour courses per semester. The successful candidate would join a team of three mathematicians and a physicist, all of whom value active learning in the classroom and the systematic development, both in class and in extracurricular activities, of communication and collaboration skills in addition to the critical thinking and problem-solving skills typically associated with the study of physics and mathematics. We value—and have always enjoyed—strong collegiality both within the Department and across campus. The successful candidate would initially teach mostly physics but would transition to teaching primarily in the Computer Science minor, which currently emphasizes data analysis/data science. In the long term, he/she will provide leadership and primary staffing for the Computer Science minor, while continuing to teach courses in physics to support the Physics minor and the Pre-Engineering program. Therefore it is essential for the candidate to develop his/her capacity to teach basic computer programming and (initially) data analysis and also to develop the Computer Science curriculum in ways that enhance its contributions to pre-engineering, to mathematics and to other disciplines on campus. Georgetown College does not discriminate, either in the admission of students, the hiring and promotion of employees, or in the administration of any of its educational policies, programs, or activities on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age or disability. We embrace diversity and inclusion, and warmly encourage women and individuals from underrepresented groups to apply. The College is a historically Baptist institution, and all full-time tenure-track faculty are expected to be Christian. In keeping, however, with Georgetown’s firm commitment to academic freedom, no creed or statement of faith is imposed upon employees, and no one theological orientation or expression of spirituality is singled out for special favor. Interested persons should submit a cover letter, vita, copies of transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, and a list of three persons who would serve as references, at https://www.joblinkapply.com/company/6682. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. More information about the college can be found at www.georgetowncollege.edu
