We have an opening for a Laser Systems Physicist to support operation of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and to assist in the modeling of laser systems. You will interact with scientific and engineering personnel, support staff, and senior management in areas of specialization that include a combination of some or all of the following: solid state laser physics and technology, femtosecond and picosecond short pulse generation and amplification, nonlinear effects, sensors and instrumentation, and systems engineering. This position is in the Laser Science and Systems Engineering Program in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Principal (NIF & PS) Directorate.
Essential Duties - Use diffractive, non-linear, propagation models to perform systems analysis and design of various lasers for current or new programs in the Directorate. - Collaborate with Laboratory scientists and engineers to execute and interpret laser experiments that test new physics and modeling capability. - Conduct maintenance and ongoing development of the Laser Performance and Operations Model (LPOM) suite of codes related to operation of NIF (currently 0.6 million lines of code). - Perform data analysis of complex NIF laser experiments, including recalibration of models, data trending, and investigation of performance issues. - Independently with minimal supervision define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure programmatic needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner. - Prepare advanced written and oral presentations on assigned projects. - Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications - Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, or Mathematics or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in solid state laser engineering, high average power laser technology and thermal management techniques, short pulse laser physics, and/or nonlinear optics as applied to laser development, applications and operations. - Significant experience with optics, laser science, and/or scientific code development. - Significant experience with scientific research and development with a record of accomplishment. - Advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to independently analyze and implement solutions to complex issues. - Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, other technical and administrative staff, and managers. - Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, prepare written reports, and provide advice to management.
Desired Qualifications - Experience in high power, solid state laser modeling or signal and image processing. - Background in inertial confinement fusion or high-power, directed energy lasers. - Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within a designated budget.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
