We have multiple openings for exceptional Engineers to work on projects in pulsed power and applied electromagnetics. You will assist in the creation of innovative solutions for multiple programs at LLNL and contribute to the research and development of next-generation pulsed power systems and experimental platforms. You will be responsible for the design, instrumentation, and execution of unique experiments that are of critical interest to national security. You will bring innovation and fundamental technical excellence to bear on some of the most challenging technical problems our nation faces and develop novel engineering practices and approaches to continually improve performance and reliability of existing R&D systems. These positions are in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
Essential Duties - Participate in designing, testing, and analyzing pulsed power and electromagnetic devices and components in support of state-of-the-art pulsed power experimental platform research and development, under general direction. - Perform simulations of electromagnetic and/or physical phenomena using the appropriate tools, which may range from SPICE-based circuit solvers to magnetohydrodynamic or full-wave electromagnetic solvers running on LLNL's Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) platforms. - Assist in representing the organization at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, including presenting and disseminating research results in open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL. - Adhere to the highest standards of personnel and facility while participating in the execution of high-energy, multi-hazard system demonstrations and experiments using well defined guidelines. - Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience. - Fundamental knowledge of and/or experience developing and applying solutions to problems in electromagnetics or optics (including impedance matching, high-voltage breakdown mitigation, antenna design and transmission line design, electromagnetic or optical diagnostic and instrumentation, and related areas). - Experience using scientific computing languages (Python, MATLAB, Mathematica or similar) to develop numerical models of physical systems. - Aptitude for (and interest in) mastering new fields of engineering and physics. - Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks, projects, and priorities. - Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate, present, and explain technical information in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications - Experience using computational tools and techniques to analyze physical problems (including numerical circuit solvers, finite-element/finite difference codes, method-of-moments codes, or hydrodynamic/magnetohydrodynamic codes). - Hands-on experience with electromagnetic and/or optical laboratory instrumentation in an R&D environment (including but not limited to oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, and optical interferometers.)
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
