The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program is funded by the National Science Foundation to support twelve highly qualified students to undertake supervised research projects in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, for a period of 10 weeks each summer. This year the program will run from June 2 to August 7, 2021. Suggested travel days are June 1 and August 7. If all research must be done remotely the opportunities will be reduced. That will not be known until spring 2021. Each student is fully integrated into a research group and works closely with graduate students, postdocs and other undergraduate students in the group and has opportunities to interact with other groups.

Qualifications:

1. Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.
2. Preference will be given to students who have completed the sophomore level physics courses or the equivalent by June 2021.
3. Outstanding freshmen students and senior students who will not graduate by June 2021 will be considered on an individual basis.
4. The National Science Foundation requires that NSF-funded students must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.  We regret that we are unable to accommodate international students who do not meet these NSF criteria even with external funding support.

Additional Salary Information: In addition to a $5000 stipend, participants are provided with housing and partial board for meals. Some funds are also available for travel expenses to and from the program for non-Rochester participants.
