Description

The Earlham College Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a full-time, three-year Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning in Fall 2021. The department prefers an experimentalist, but is open to all sub-fields, and all qualified applicants who can teach Advanced Lab are welcome. The Department seeks a person who is passionate about Physics/Astronomy and teaching — in lecture, seminar classes, laboratory, and research venues — to bright and motivated undergraduates at a nationally ranked small liberal arts college, and is equally committed to making our department an inclusive place for all students and faculty. Our goal is to build a department that supports a wide range of diversity.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach a range of topics, including introductory courses and labs as well as advanced courses and a senior seminar in the candidate’s area of interest. Conference travel funds and assistance with applications for external grants, is available to successful candidates who wish to engage in scholarly activities. Additionally, there is the opportunity to apply for summer research funds and faculty development funds.  The successful candidate will receive departmental mentorship.

 

Departmental & Institutional Information

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a small, dynamic group with 3 full-time faculty members, administrative support, and active research programs in computational biophysics and gravitational physics. Earlham's facilities include local cluster computing resources, a teaching observatory, a natural history museum with a planetarium, a laser physics research lab, and dedicated research laboratory space for a successful candidate.

Earlham is a liberal arts college of approximately 1000 students and is affiliated with the Society of Friends (Quakers). The Earlham College student body is diverse (while most students are from the Eastern and Midwestern states, 22% are international, coming from 59 nations in 2017, 25% are domestic students of color, 10% are Quaker), and there are multiple opportunities to work with students in meaningful ways both in and out of the classroom.

Experience & Qualifications

Preference will go to applicants who have completed (or are presently finalizing a dissertation for) a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field. Earlham holds excellence in teaching as its most important criterion, so as we review applications we will be looking for evidence of a strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate level. The department needs a candidate who can teach Advanced Lab and maintain typical Advanced Lab equipment.
