We have an opening for a Nuclear Diagnostician to support Global Security's Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) and Nuclear Counter Terrorism and Counter Proliferation (NCTCP) Programs. You will work as part of a dynamic and diverse team to provide computational and modeling support to the NEST research efforts and operations. You will be required to work at LLNL in Livermore, and travel to offsite locations and facilities. This position will report programmatically to the NEST Nuclear Diagnostics Lead and administratively to the Nondestructive Evaluation Group (NDE) within the Materials Engineering Division (MED).

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

• Model radiation and imaging detector responses of highly complex nuclear systems and communicate results to experts and non-experts in this field.
• Perform complex laboratory experiments and interpret results to build and validate detector models and response functions.
• Lead measurement and training campaigns employing significant quantities of nuclear material in subcritical experiments and benchmarks or sealed sources in training assemblies.
• Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, in both open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL. Positively represent the Program and Laboratory demonstrating advanced verbal and written skills. Responsibilities may also include interacting with external stakeholders, both at NNSA and across the broader interagency, via offsite assignments.
• Train non-expert emergency response personnel on diagnostic tools within the context of their operational procedures.
• Independently manage concurrent technical projects/tasks with competing priorities in a multi-disciplinary team environment, where commitments and deadlines are important to project success.
• Travel domestically and internationally up to 25% time, for support and customer interaction.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.4 level

• Provide subject matter expertise and analysis on highly complex nuclear systems and collaborate with scientist, engineers, and technicians to provide diagnostic support to various programmatic tasks.
• Represent the organization as the primary technical contact on multiple diagnostic related tasks and large projects, working effectively with conflicting priorities and participate in programmatic sustainment and growth by identifying and addressing complex sponsor needs and prioritizing collaborations with LLNL staff and across the community.
• Create innovative diagnostic tools and evaluate competing characteristics to determine solutions that most effectively meet objectives; provide subject matter expertise to customers and stakeholders in highly complex problem areas.
