Lab Lecturer - Department of Physics and Astronomy
Swarthmore College
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Swarthmore College invites applications for a Lab Lecturer to teach and support the instructional laboratories. We seek candidates with experience teaching undergraduate laboratories and a dedication to development of high-quality curricula for the lab program. While the introductory physics labs are the primary focus of this position, there are opportunities to contribute to the astronomy labs and observatory, to the advanced labs, and to physics education research. In addition to teaching lab sections, lab lecturers support the labs by ordering, maintaining, and setting up equipment, supporting faculty with lecture demonstrations and training on new lab experiments, and collaborating with department faculty to develop and document new lab curricula. The ability to work collegially with others and strong organizational skills are essential. Starting fall semester 2021, this is a one-year appointment to the instructional staff with possibility of reappointment to a three-year term. Instructional staff are benefits-eligible nine-month employees whose salaries are paid out over twelve months. Located in the suburbs of Philadelphia and near Wilmington DE, Swarthmore College is a highly selective liberal arts college whose mission combines academic rigor with social responsibility. The Department of Physics and Astronomy instructional staff currently consists of seven physicists, two astronomers, and one other lecturer. In addition, the department has a dedicated machinist and electronics technician. Swarthmore has a strong institutional commitment to diversity, and actively seeks and welcomes applications from candidates with exceptional qualifications, particularly those with demonstrable commitments to a more inclusive society and world. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. To apply, follow the link to Interfolio job number 84365 to submit: Consideration of applications will begin March 24, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. Please address any questions you may have to the search chair, Prof. Amy Graves (agraves1@swarthmore.edu).
