About RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science
RIKEN is Japan's largest comprehensive research institution renowned for high-quality research in a diverse range of scientific disciplines. Founded in 1917 as a private research foundation in Tokyo, RIKEN has grown rapidly in size and scope, today encompassing a network of world-class research centers and institutes across Japan. The Nishina Center operates the RI Beam Factory (RIBF), the world's highest performing heavy ion accelerator facility where radioisotopes that do not exist in nature are artificially created. The Nishina Center promotes researches on the synthesis of superheavy elements with one prime example being nihonium, researches in the fields of magic numbers, nucleosynthesis in the universe, and reducing radioactive waste, as well as theoretical research linking these fields. The RIBF is also utilized for medical, agricultural, and IT purposes such as nuclear medicine, breeding, and semiconductor developments.
