We have an opening for a Polymer Chemist to conduct general to moderately complex experimental research in polymer formulation, characterization, application testing, and scale up. You will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers supporting experimental development of polymers used in cutting-edge laser systems, including the National Ignition Facility. This position is in the Optics & Target Materials group within the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

• Formulate and characterize designer polymers designed for laser and optical systems, including those requiring specific curing, outgassing, mechanical, refractive index, optical clarity, or laser damage performance.
• Perform materials characterization including but not limited to physicothermal properties, rheometry, mechanical testing, and optical characterization.
• Work with a process engineering team to scale up the synthesis of new materials and develop processes to integrate new materials into laser systems.
• Serve as general chemistry resource for other researchers.
• Keep accurate and detailed laboratory records; generate, organize, and analyze experimental data; and participate in research planning.
• Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals and provide solutions to problems with moderate complexity.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

• Participate in the conception and design of moderately complex to complex new experiments to execute research to address defined problems and emerging challenges in polymer chemistry.
• Prepare written analyses, verbal briefings, and other products that capture and communicate research results including conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal articles.
