Colorado State University (CSU) seeks an experienced laser scientist/engineer to work in the development and operation of advanced high power lasers to be used in ultra-intense laser-matter interactions experiments at the Advanced Beam Laboratory (ABL). The ABL is part of LaserNet US, a network of the most powerful lasers in North America funded by the US Department of Energy with the purpose of providing US and international scientists with access to ultra-high intensity beams. The ABL is equipped with one of the world’s most intense lasers, ALEPH (Advanced Laser for Extreme Photonics), that was developed in-house. ALEPH is capable of delivering pulses of nearly one Petawatt power at a high repetition rate. The laboratory is also a leader in the development of high average power high energy lasers ranging from high average power high energy ultrashort pulse solid state lasers to compact plasma-based soft x-ray lasers. The ABL fosters innovation and is equipped with state-of-the-art laser development and characterization equipment, and with advanced dense plasma diagnostics instrumentation. Facilities also includes state-of-the-art multilayer coating deposition and characterization equipment. Colorado State University is located in Fort Collins at the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain. The city is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the US.
The selected candidate will operate ALEPH in support of experiments by user groups from institutions in the US and worldwide who will conduct LaserNet US user experiments. The research scientist will also have a leading role in the design and implementation of upgrades to ALEPH, and in the development of other high repetition rate high intensity lasers in collaboration with graduate students and other scientists/engineers at CSU. The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline. Research Scientist position is a 12-month position with a target start day of July 1, 2022.
