SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Advanced Technical Planning Department within the Accelerator Directorate is seeking an R&D Manufacturing Planner with extensive experience in cost estimating, scheduling and planning to fabricate a wide variety of prototype devices, such as collimators, beam stoppers, wire scanners, profile monitors and complex vacuum chambers. As the primary interface between the customer and the manufacturing facility, you will review fabrication requests to develop cost and schedule estimates. You will manage the fabrication workflow by planning the workflow and coordinating the advanced fabrication processes, which includes material testing, precision machining, ultra-high-vacuum cleaning and plating, welding, vacuum processing, quality verification and installation.
Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to hybrid on-site and telecommuting work options.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Critically reviewing the fabrication requirements submitted by engineering and scientific staff and determine if the scope of work is adequately described for successful fabrication.
- Collaboration with engineering and scientific staff and get clarification where needed.
- Developing the manufacturing plan and cost and schedule estimates to support scientific and engineering projects.
- Providing customers with an accurate estimated cost and schedule for a defined scope of work.
- Communicating the project proposal with customer and obtain approval to proceed.
- Utilizing a material requirements planning (MRP) tool to plan and track work.
- Structure the Bill of Materials
- Identify materials, processes and resource requirements
- Determine what materials are available on hand, what must be purchased, and what will be fabricated
- Coordinate materials procurement and develop the fabrication workflow
- Select qualified suppliers, get quotations
- Initiate purchase requisitions, coordinate with purchasing to track cost & delivery, enter costs into shop database, expedite PO’s, receive, unpack,
and stage kits, maintain lot control - Write, sequence and issue individual fabrication requests
- Overseeing the fabrication processes through completion
- Communicating any changes to cost and schedule to the customer real-time.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
- A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, or related field, and three years of equivalent work experience; or combination of education and relevant experience in R&D fabrication planning.
- Demonstrated experience with cost estimating and scheduling of fabrication work.
- Demonstrated knowledge of advanced manufacturing engineering practices and an in-depth understanding of fabrication requirements and compatible materials required for ultra-high vacuum.
- Experience working with Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems, spreadsheets and databases.
- Familiarity working with CAD applications (computer-aided design software).
- Ability to read ANSI standard mechanical drawings of piece-parts and fabrication assembly drawings, plan a fabrication workflow, write shop travelers.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of staff, including engineers, scientists, technicians, and fabrication staff.
- Experience coordinating R&D engineering projects.

Physical requirements:
- Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
