Guilford College invites applications for a full time visiting assistant faculty position in the Physics Department to begin August 2023. This is a two-year position with the potential to be renewed. We are looking for a person who enjoys teaching undergraduates, both in the classroom and in the lab. The successful candidate for the position will teach courses for the physics major, general education lab courses, and algebra-based introductory physics for life and health science students. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in advanced laboratory, electronics, and optics experimental pedagogy. The physics department has a long history of supporting undergraduate research, and its majors are highly creative and engaged students. Guilford College is a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, and candidates with interest in cross-disciplinary work are encouraged to present their ideas. People with advanced degrees in physics and graduate students nearing the completion of their degree are encouraged to apply. We specifically encourage applicants with identities, abilities, and experiences that are underrepresented in higher education.
Review of applications will begin mid to late January 2023 and the position will stay open until filled. The position will involve teaching three course equivalents per semester (two lab sections count as one course) and possibly mentoring students in research projects. In addition to the algebra-based introductory physics course, the position would include teaching sophomore modern physics, experimental physics beyond the first year, and electronics for both majors and general education students.
Candidates should upload a description of teaching interests (in particular how the candidate would approach teaching advanced laboratory experimental techniques) in the “other” section of the application. Letters of reference will be requested from final candidates.
