Prestigious fellowship for “disruptive” scientists with high academic ambition. We offer unique and interdisciplinary experience of a Western scientific culture in Korea. Our Center combines the fields of chemistry, artificial intelligence, and robotics with recent outcomes published in 6 Nature, 3 Science, 27 Nature-family journals, and showing our leadership in retrosynthesis planning (using programs like Chematica and Allchemy), AI-driven reaction optimization, computer-assisted circular chemistry, and related basic-science aspects. The algorithms and technologies we create are already having transformative impact on chemical technology and chemical discovery at large.
Our vision is to make synthetic and materials chemistry an algorithmic and robotized science and to educate young researchers who carry the vision into their own independent laboratories after they leave this IBS Center. Progress towards achieving this vision has resulted in former research fellows who presently hold assistant professor positions in South Korea, Europe, China, Canada, and the U.S.A.
The position offers independence, independent funding to attend international meetings, and training in the skills important for success as faculty. Interested recipients will be given priority to join our personnel-exchange collaborations with prestigious overseas labs.

IBS Research Center led by Prof. Bartosz Grzybowski, (Succeeding) Director, Center for Algorithmic Synthesis and Evolution(May 2023, Tentative) / Group Leader, Center for Soft and Living Matter; Distinguished Professor of Department of Chemistry, UNIST; Professor of Polish Academy of Sciences.
Grzybowski group has pioneered applications of artificial intelligence and network theory to synthetic chemistry - this work has given rise to the creation of the Chematica/Synthia platform for computerized retrosynthesis of complex molecules, including natural products (Nature 2020a), as well as the Allchemy software for the discovery of new synthetic methodologies and new functional molecules (Science 2020, Nature 2022). Our current interests in this arena focus on computer-driven discovery of new reactions and catalysts and also on robotized systems in which chemical AI controls and optimizes actual experiments. We are also very active in a quest to develop "smart" systems that, in one vessel, perform multiple chemical reactions and/or processes - for instance, multistep synthetic cascades (Nature 2020b) or processes (Nature 2022c). We are also working at the intersection of molecular ch...emistry with nanotechnology to develop platforms for selective catalysis (JACS 2021) as well as therapeutic warheads for selective cancer intervention (Nature Nanotech 2020). Overall, we are a diverse crowd of chemists, physicists, and biologists and we pursue research that we think is paradigm-shifting and/or addresses important societal needs.
