The Ruhr area, one of Europe's largest metropolitan regions, offers attractive career opportunities for excellent scientists and scholars from around the world. In 2021, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen established the Research Alliance Ruhr to bundle their cutting-edge international research on the most urgent challenges facing humankind. There will be four research centers and a college. This is just the latest chapter in our long-standing collaboration as the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), a community of 14,000 researchers and 120,000 students in the heart of Germany.
As part of the Research Alliance Ruhr, the Research Center Future Energy Materials and Systems (RC FEMS) is seeking to fill the following position at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum as soon as possible:
Professorship (W3) for Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy (m/f/d)
Your Responsibilities
The person selected to hold the new professorship will build an internationally visible research program and initiate, acquire, and carry out interdisciplinary research projects and foster international contacts. The research focus should be on the use of advanced analytical and quantitative transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with novel in situ and in operando methods to investigate structure-function relations in materials for future energy systems. Complex chemical, electronic and magnetic structures, interfaces (e.g., solid-solid, solid-liquid), low-dimensional materials, quantum- and nanomaterials should be studied on broad length and time scales and employing control parameters such as temperature, strain, electric or magnetic fields.
The successful candidate should also demonstrate interest in materials informatics and modeling for advanced and autonomous microscopy and phase analysis as well as for correlative microscopy.
The teaching load is reduced to four weekly hours per semester. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to English-taught courses in the Master's degree programs.
Your Qualifications
The future professor should be an internationally acknowledged scientist in the field of advanced analytical and quantitative TEM including in situ methods, with experience in the study of structure, properties and kinetics of materials with high resolution in real and reciprocal space. Applicants are expected to provide outstanding expertise to support and further develop cooperation within the interdisciplinary materials research department (MRD, www.mrd.rub.de), in the ZGH (http://zgh.rub.de) with its research directions of mechanically-, physically- and chemically-dominated interfaces, and the existing and future CRCs with a focus on solid-state physics and drive the thematic expansion of the Research Center FEMS.
Expertise in leadership of a research group as well as publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals and successful experience in the acquisition of competitive third-party funding projects are mandatory. Strong organizational skills, the ability to cooperate with other researchers, and the willingness to independently initiate and guide large research proposals are required.
In addition, the recruitment criteria of Sections 36 and 37 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act (Gesetz über die Hochschulen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, HG NRW) apply.
Attractive Environment
The Research Center “Future Energy Materials and Systems” aims to develop new materials that are urgently needed for energy carrier generation, energy conversion, storage, and transport in a targeted, rapid and sustainable manner. The goal is to understand fundamental properties and relevant processes in the generation and use of complex materials in order to develop building blocks for a sustainable energy system. At the same time, the center is looking into regenerative processes to replace energy-intensive ways of materials production and processing. Here, nine new professorships will be established over the next three years. The Research Center is linked to all three member universities of the University Alliance Ruhr. We offer you an excellent scientific environment and attractive opportunities for collaboration with renowned international, national, and regional partners. The professorship advertised here will be closely associated with the faculty of physics as well as the materials research department (MRD) and the Center for interface-dominated high performance materials (ZGH) of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
Research Alliance Ruhr
The Research Alliance Ruhr is a joint undertaking of the three major universities in the Ruhr area and was initiated by the Ruhr Conference. The four research centers will focus on "One Health," "Chemical Sciences and Sustainability," "Trustworthy Data Science and Security," and "Future Energy Materials and Systems.” In addition, the Research Alliance Ruhr is establishing a "College for Social Sciences and Humanities".
The Research Alliance Ruhr will appoint 50 research professors in the next few years and also offer numerous positions for research assistants. Join us now to create innovations for the world of tomorrow in Europe's densest university landscape, where you can find a wide range of scientific and industrial partners right on the doorstep.
