The Department of Physics at UC Merced will host an NSF REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program in summer 2023.

Projects will span a range of subfields in physics, both experimental and theoretical, including biophysics; condensed matter and solar science; atomic, molecular, and optical physics and quantum optics; nonlinear dynamics; soft condensed matter; and astrophysics. Review of applications will begin on February 10 and continue on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

In addition to conducting research, students will participate in a variety of social and professional development activities as part of the Summer Research Institute (SURI) organized by the UC Merced Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center. These include boot camps on research skills, training on effectively presenting research results, panels on the graduate school admissions process, and a variety of additional programming, as well as optional trips and social events.
