The group of Prof. Adilson E. Motter at Northwestern University is currently recruiting postdoctoral researchers interested in applications of network science to the study of complex physical systems. Topics of interest include mechanical metamaterial networks, quantum network science, power grids and energy systems, microfluidic networks, coupled laser systems, biophysical networks, synchronization phenomena, cascading failures, network inference, and control of complex networks. The projects are theoretical and computational but benefit from empirical data and close collaborations with experimental colleagues.
The positions are open to recent PhDs in physics, materials science, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, and related fields. Competitive candidates will have outstanding computational, analytical, and communication skills, and demonstrated ability to conduct high-impact research. Ideal candidates will also have familiarity with network modeling (broadly construed), nonlinear dynamics, statistical physics, data science, machine learning, and/or the application of interest.
Appointments are available immediately and are renewable for up to three years. Salary is competitive and commensurable with qualifications. In exceptional cases, more experienced researchers may also be considered for research faculty positions.
The Motter Group is located on the Evanston Campus of Northwestern University, on the north shore of Lake Michigan, within a 30-minute drive from downtown Chicago. Group members have offices in the Technological Institute and enjoy ample interactions with researchers from other disciplines through the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems. For more information, please explore our group's website.
To apply, candidates should e-mail a CV and a brief description of how their research interests relate to this position to Adilson Motter at motter@northwestern.edu, and arrange to have at least two letters of recommendation sent directly to the same address. Review of applications will start immediately and continue until April 1, 2023. All applications received by March 10, 2023, will be given full consideration.
Northwestern University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Applications from women and individuals from underrepresented groups are encouraged.
