The Department of Physics invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level. Ranks at Associate Professor or above will also be considered for candidates with exceptional record of research excellence and academic leadership. Applicants must possess a PhD degree in physics or related fields and have evidence of strong research productivity.

We seek experimental candidates in quantum matter and quantum information, including quantum and low-dimensional materials, materials with strong electronic correlations, cold atoms, quantum optics, and quantum enabled technologies. We also seek theoretical candidates in condensed matter theory, statistical physics, neural networks or data analytics. 

Appointees are expected to assume teaching responsibilities for undergraduate and graduate courses, and to conduct vigorous research programs. Further information about the Department is available at http://physics.ust.hk.

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including medical and dental benefits, annual leave and housing will be provided where applicable. Initial appointment will normally be on a three-year contract. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a dynamic, young research university with a diverse international faculty and student body in relentless pursuit of excellence. Situated on the hillside overlooking scenic Clear Water Bay at the eastern edge of Hong Kong and southeastern coast of China, HKUST has rapidly established itself as a leading institution on the academic world map in the short time since it was founded in 1991. The mission of the Department is captured by the triangle of teaching, research, and innovation. “By pursing research at the frontier of knowledge and innovation at the cutting edge of technology, the ultimate goal of the physics faculty is to preserve and nurture a sense of wonder about the natural world, and to impart it to the students as a driving motivation for learning.” The Department of Physics offers rigorous and competitive undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physics. Currently, we have about 200 undergraduate students and 150 postgraduate students. Eight gold and five silver medalists of IPhO (International Physics Olympiad) from Hong Kong, Mainland China, India, Vietnam and Cambodia had joined our department ...during 2011-2016. The Department has 35 full-time faculty members (19 experimentalists and 16 theoristis) with significant expertise in the areas of Atomic, Molecular and Optical (AMO) Physics, Biophysics, Computational Physics, Condensed Matter (CM) Physics, Particle Theory and Cosmology (PTC), Soft Condensed Matter Physics, Statistical Physics, etc. Among our faculty members, 10 of them are Fellows of American Physics Society and one of them is Nobel laureate, Professor George F Smoot, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006. The Department of Physics has a large collection of the state-of-the-art research equipment for laser physics, photonics, new thin-film materials, surface/interface studies, solid state properties, polymers and liquid crystals, nanostructured layers and clusters, and nonlinear dynamics. A number of central service facilities and interdisciplinary research institutes provide support for the Department's research programs. Particularly relevant are the Materials Characterisation and Preparation Facility (MCPF) and the Nanosystem Fabrication Facility. Our faculty works on focused topic and interdisciplinary research through several research institutes and centers.
