Description:
Earlham College invites applications for a Laboratory Manager in the Department of Physics, Engineering & Astronomy. This is a full time, Administrative Faculty appointment with benefits. Primary job duties include laboratory support and inventory management for the department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy. Earlham is launching an Engineering program in 2023, and this person will be involved in the design and setup of the experimental aspects of this program.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepare, set up and test experimental apparatus for each week’s labs
- Disassemble and store equipment after each week’s labs
- Optimize equipment for precision & accuracy
- Prepare classroom physics demonstrations
- Conduct weekly lab meetings with TAs
- Communicate with lab instructors regarding details of experiments, apparatus and procedures for each week’s labs
- Develop, update, and catalog documentation for equipment and experiments
- Manage inventory of laboratory and demonstration equipment and supplies, including both introductory and advanced lab equipment
- Perform maintenance and repairs on equipment as needed
- Assist faculty in the development and implementation of new labs and new demonstrations
- Teach lab sections of a variety of both introductory and advanced lab courses
- Coordinate with department administrative assistant on purchase, maintenance, and housekeeping needs.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or related field strongly preferred
- Candidates from non-traditional paths possessing particularly strong lab experience and significant coursework in physics will be considered
- Ability to make minor repairs to laboratory equipment is required, including basic electronics and hardware skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively is essential
