Overview The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
The successful candidate will conduct research in the area of plasma boundary physics, primarily focused either on experiments or modeling, and aimed at supporting power exhaust and plasma-facing component (PFC) design for fusion devices, using liquid metal PFCs. The candidate will lead experiments to validate techniques for the delivery of lithium vapor to fusion-relevant plasmas or will perform numerical modeling of lithium vapor box divertors for fusion devices. The candidate will be based onsite in Princeton NJ; occasional travel to support collaborative research on offsite facilities may be required.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research and disseminating results in the form of talks, posters, and refereed journal articles, principally related to boundary physics and liquid metal PFCs. The candidate will participate in the liquid metal plasma-facing component program at PPPL, including designs for future deployments of liquid metal systems on a range of devices.
Qualifications Education and Experience:
- Applicant should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field. Strong analytical and English communication skills are required. Experience with experimental fusion boundary physics as well as experimental lithium science and technology or with 2-D numerical modeling of plasma boundaries is preferred.
Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. EEO IS THE LAW
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from participation in certain foreign government talent recruitment programs. All PPPL employees are required to disclose any participation in a foreign government talent recruitment program and may be required to withdraw from such programs to remain employed under the DOE Contract.
