Postdoctoral positions are available in Prof. Bartosz Grzybowski’s laboratory (http://grzybowski-group.net/ ) at the Institute of Basic Science (IBS), Center for Algorithmic Synthesis and Evolution (CASE), and Department of Chemistry in Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in Ulsan. Prof. Grzybowski is an inventor of Chematica organic retrosynthesis software (now Synthia by Merck/Sigma-Aldrich), and author of the textbook “Chemistry in Motion: Reaction-Diffusion Systems for Micro? and Nanotechnology”, and a recipient of 2016 Feynman Prize in nanotechnology. Several former postdocs and research fellows from this laboratory have landed independent faculty positions internationally.
CASE center focus on the important scientific challenge of using computer-assisted synthesis planning and robotics to enable fundamental discovery in chemistry and biochemistry. The main keywords of our research include AI and Algorithms, Synthesis, Robotics, Molecular-level evolution. We will work on the closed-loop, AI-driven discovery of new catalysts and bioactive molecules and nanoconstructs, and we will start developing fully robotized platforms to guide such discovery. We will be interested in the theory of catalysis and transition states, and in the logic and grammar of chemical syntheses.
We are specifically looking for scientists with strong background in AI and Algorithms.

Grzybowski group has pioneered applications of artificial intelligence and network theory to synthetic chemistry - this work has given rise to the creation of the Chematica/Synthia platform for computerized retrosynthesis of complex molecules, including natural products (Nature 2020a), as well as the Allchemy software for the discovery of new synthetic methodologies and new functional molecules (Science 2020, Nature 2022). Our current interests in this arena focus on computer-driven discovery of new reactions and catalysts and also on robotized systems in which chemical AI controls and optimizes actual experiments. We are also very active in a quest to develop "smart" systems that, in one vessel, perform multiple chemical reactions and/or processes - for instance, multistep synthetic cascades (Nature 2020b) or processes (Nature 2022c). We are also working at the intersection of molecular ch...emistry with nanotechnology to develop platforms for selective catalysis (JACS 2021) as well as therapeutic warheads for selective cancer intervention (Nature Nanotech 2020). Overall, we are a diverse crowd of chemists, physicists, and biologists and we pursue research that we think is paradigm-shifting and/or addresses important societal needs.
