Position Summary The Department of Physics is inviting applicants for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in experimental nuclear physics, particularly with experience in hot or cold QCD studies and preferably an interest in modern detector technologies. The successful candidate is expected to participate in the experimental nuclear physics program at a collider facility with a preference to starting and leading developments for the new Electron Ion Collider (EIC) project that is being established at Brookhaven National Laboratory and funded by the US Department of Energy. The department has a strong group of faculty working in theory and experiment in high energy nuclear physics that includes active involvement with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. This experimental physics hire is part of an expansion of the nuclear physics group activities towards the EIC program. The final authorization of this position is subject to the availability of funding.
Duties & Responsibilities Establish a highly visible and externally funded research program in experimental nuclear physics. This research program will include a robust, forefront, research program focused on PhD doctoral graduate students as well as on providing appropriate research opportunities for undergraduate students. The candidate is also expected to have a commitment to teaching physics at both undergraduate and graduate levels within a research-one university environment that is also very focused on serving historically underserved students in an inclusive and diverse environment.
